Direct aid to ukraine

There are no words for what is happening in our eastern world. The political crisis between Russia and Ukraine began on February 24th, 2022, and since then the attack has continued with increasing severity. An unimaginable thought, especially for all the Ukrainians who have to leave their families and property behind. According to estimates by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), more than 2.5 million people have fled their homes so far and the number is growing by thousands every day.

When we got the message from our friend Gabriel McCloskey, who, together with his friends Katharina Schaer and Dirk Hanschur, organized a donation transport to the Ukraine and at the same time a return transport for refugees, we immediately knew that we wanted to support them. With their selfless nature, they show that helping people is an affair of the heart.

The three friends experienced what impressive things can happen when thoughts are put into action and a spark becomes a fire:

Contacts were made quickly and within a few days they had organized two buses packed to the brim, ready to leave. “The willingness to help of our friends and acquaintances was overwhelming!” they quickly stated.

Gabriel, who runs a car repair shop, made his Sprinter available and organized another bus with 8 seats. Jaroslaw Jasinski from Friedrichshafen quickly became one of their most relevant contacts, because he has been collecting donations in kind for weeks and, through his local contacts, ensures a reliable supply chain right into Ukraine. For this achievement he is dependent on the help of people like Katharina, Dirk & Gabriel, because many compatriots fall through the cracks at the official organizations, because the border is hundreds of kilometers long. "We were very impressed by his integrity and we quickly adopted his recommended route and advice," they report.

On March 11th, 2022, the three of them drove towards the border, but not before having privately arranged accommodation for the refugees - three families were finally taken to southern Germany on Sunday. The commitment of the threesome to taking in and accommodating six refugees on their own has met with great recognition from us, because they also support them with dealing with the authorities and with everything their network has to offer.

“Driving aimlessly to the border on your own and then wondering that there is already a lot there gives a distorted picture of the situation. You have to organize yourself with people who are going into the Ukraine, because most of the people's escape routes are cut off and the suffering is very great," say Katharina, Dirk and Gabriel.

"The leap of faith and the gratitude of the refugees touched us incredibly! In particular, the two young girls we had with us made the long journey easier with their sunny dispositions!” the three report unanimously, “because what the people experienced is unimaginable.

“Two families had traveled from Kyiv for days, as well as a family from Kharkiv. All with young children. All cannot and do not want to go back to their homeland - because it no longer exists!

How can we help?

With your help, we would like to support the three volunteers from southern Germany so that weekly transports for the refugees from the Ukraine can be organized. We are grateful for any financial support. 100% of all donations flow directly into the implementation of the project and we guarantee that the relief supplies will end up exactly where they are needed most. Because they are not handed in at the border, but taken inland. In addition to the costs for transport including fuel, the donations are used for food, medicine, baby food and hygiene items, among other things.

We are also grateful for every offer of possible accommodation. If you have any questions or information about accommodation, please contact the following email address: direkthilfe-ukraine@web.de
