Educational initiative for orphans – Gaounga, Benin | Sustainable support

There are places where children grow up without family support and therefore deserve hope for a better future. In the village of Gaouga in northern Benin, the association Wasser für Afrika (Water for Africa) is committed to ensuring that orphans can go to school, thus laying the foundation for them to earn a living.

It was a matter close to our hearts to support Project 2025, which currently supports 38 children. Together with the association's local partner Sylvain Nassam Djaffo Augustin, we are ensuring that these children have access to education, meals, and basic documents.

Augustin grew up in Gaounga, where many members of his extended family still live. He himself lives with his wife and two adult children in Parakou, Benin's second largest city. He studied civil engineering and has 40 years of experience in development aid projects.

He works for a Beninese NGO and implements projects in the areas of nutrition, WASH, education, and youth development. Together with the Water for Africa association, he is passionately committed to the development of his home region and, like everyone else in the association, does so on a voluntary basis.

Overview of measures

  • School supplies: All children were provided with notebooks, pens, and other learning materials.

  • Birth certificates: 35 children received an official identity for the first time—an important step for their future.

  • School fees: The fees for teachers and school operations were covered in full.

  • Lunch: The children receive a hot meal every day in the school canteen.

  • Transparency: A detailed report documents the use of funds and the progress of the project.

Challenges and solutions

The implementation was not without hurdles. Many children did not have birth certificates, which jeopardized their school careers. The bureaucratic processes were long, and the bumpy trips to Djougou (35 km away) were costly – but in the end, all the necessary documents were issued.

It was also impossible for the families to finance school fees and the canteen. With our help, these burdens were completely offset.

Outlook for 2026–2027

Next year, the Wasser für Afrika (Water for Africa) association wants to expand the project and support 50 children. The plans are as follows:

  • School supplies for all children

  • Birth certificates for another 15 children

  • Daily meals

  • Contributions to pay teachers

  • New: basic health insurance for every child

Your help counts

For just CHF 60 per year, a child in Gaounga can be provided with everything they need to succeed at school – including food, medical care, and small gifts on special occasions.

A total of 50 children are to be supported. This requires CHF 3,000. Every donation – whether large or small – helps to give these children an education, security, and new prospects for the future.

Thank you very much for your valuable support!

With your donation, you will help to ensure that even more orphans receive an education and open up real prospects for their future. A contribution of CHF 60 per year provides sustainable support and covers school fees, school supplies, meals, and basic health insurance.
